The election season this year is producing a collective national eye roll. Hillary Clinton says Donald Trump is the candidate of the Klu Klux Klan. Trump calls his opponent "crooked Hillary," and charges her with leaking national secrets. That's on a good day. Many people wonder when selection of political leadership was more genteel. In truth, it probably never was.
