The government shutdown is throwing sand in the gears of the private economy. A new staff report from the Senate Commerce Committee highlights some of the ways that’s happening. But the authors of the report also point to several ways in which federal furloughs are jeopardizing public safety. A breakdown from Federal News Radio’s Jared Serbu.

Some hard feelings over pay may be popping up across the government. Employees who are working wonder why their colleagues who are on furlough should get paid even though they’re not working now.
