One area of defense spending that doesn’t get a lot of attention is the hundreds of millions of dollars spent each year on tuition assistance for service members.
As DoD tightens its purse strings, the department wants to increase its oversight of for-profit, online college degree programs, Stars and Stripes reports.
Under the proposed policy, DoD would hold online colleges to the same review process as schools with traditional classrooms.
DoD also wants to institute “memorandums of understanding” between the department and the schools.
The change is happening, largely, as a result of a Government Accountability Office report that criticized 15 popular for-profit schools for deceptive recruiting practices.
