A Government Accountability Office report said the Office of Personnel Management needs to do a better job of protecting private information when conducting background checks.

OPM uses an “extensive amount of “personally identifiable information” when conducting background checks.

GAO recommends that OPM develop guidance for privacy impact assessments to analyze privacy risks.

About 90 percent of all federal background investigations are provided by the OPM’s Federal Investigative Services division, according to the report.
