Following the release of the Defense Department’s cybersecurity strategy, one expert says it’s now time for a national strategy that engages everyone to better understand the technology they use on a personal level.
Richard Harknett, university faculty chair at the University of Cincinnati, authored “Leaving Deterrence Behind: War-Fighting and National Cybersecurity.” He also wrote a column for Cincinnati.com, where he argued that safeguarding the Web, which most of us use every day, is just as important as protecting the country’s national borders.
“We need to engage in a broad national conversation about a technology that empowers us and simultaneously makes us highly vulnerable,” he wrote. “The Pentagon has taken a solid step forward, but much more needs to be done. Just going about our cyber-lives contributing to national vulnerability on a daily basis is not a condition we can continue to live with.”
He joined In Depth with Francis Rose to discuss establishing a national cyber strategy aimed at everyday citizens.
