Money is finally coming to help employees at Walter Reed Medical Center get to work.

Maryland lawmakers will present a check for $40 million to the local transportation authority. It’s for a pedestrian tunnel from the National Institutes of Health metro station to Walter Reed. The two federal facilities face each other across a busy Bethesda road.

Just last week the Defense Department awarded a $7 million grant to ease post-BRAC traffic at that intersection.

The Base Realignment and Closure process merged the Army and Naval medical centers and brought about 2,500 more workers and thousands more patients and families to the Bethesda site. Maryland officials expect to receive about $90 million in total for BRAC-related transportation projects.
