What’s closed and what’s open for federal employees?
Most federal buildings have reopened after the Hurricane Sandy hit the East Coast.

After four days of closures in the D.C. region, most federal agencies and organizations that service federal employees have reopened. This list will be continuously updated as Federal News Radio learns more.
OPERATING STATUS:
- Federal government buildings in the D.C. area reopened Thursday and were operating under normal procedures, according to the Office of Personnel Management.
- The New York City FEB recommends on Friday that non-essential personnel working for agencies based in Lower-Manhattan not be required to report to work and that offices should remain closed. Other agencies should consider offering unscheduled/alternative leave where appropriate with each agency following its own telework policy. Each agency is responsible for deciding on its own status and passing that information along to its employees. The following New York City buildings are operating on emergency power and are open only to authorized personnel: 26 Federal Plaza, 290 Broadway, 201 Varick St., and 500 Pearl St. Power is expected to be restored by Saturday. The following buildings are offline and open only to authorized personnel: 233 Broadway and 1 Bowling Green. The General Services Administration will update employees at 1 Bowling Green of the building’s operating status as information becomes available. No word is available yet from the FEBs in Philadelphia and Boston.
- The U.S. District Courts in Newark and Trenton, N.J., are closed through Friday, Nov. 2.
In addition, federal agencies in the Baltimore area returned to business under normal procedures Thursday, according to the city’s Federal Executive Board.
TRANSPORTATION SERVICES:
- Amtrak Northeast Corridor (On Thursday, Amtrak finished pumping water from one of its tunnels under the Hudson River. Amtrak is currently taking reservations for modified service to and from New York and points south. This includes Philadelphia and Trenton. Amtrak will provide Northeast Regional and Acela Express modified service Friday, along the Northeast Corridor from Boston to Washington, D.C., via New York City. Passengers are encouraged to make reservations on their smartphones or computers using the eTicketing option. More detailed information is available online.)
BUILDINGS AND INSTALLATIONS:
- Census Bureau (All Regional Offices open except for New York Regional Office, which is still closed due to power outages.)
- Securities and Exchange Commission (New York office was closed Thursday. The operating status has not been updated for Friday yet. All other SEC offices are open.)
- Veterans Affairs Medical Centers — Click here to search for your VA medical centers’ operating status.
- EEOC (The New York District Office is closed until further notice.)
- Social Security Administration – (Social Security Administration (SSA) offices at headquarters and the Baltimore Metropolitan area are open. Click here for a full list of SSA offices closed across the country.)
