House committee: DoD should improve Rx drug tracking

The House Appropriations Committee wants DoD to electronically find and track pharmaceutical information for troops at war.

The House Appropriations Committee wants the Defense Department to electronically find and track pharmaceutical information for troops at war.

The committee, in its report of the 2012 military budget, said it worries that doctors are increasingly prescribing pain medications that can lead to dependency. The committee also said tracking pain-management drugs is inconsistent within DoD.

The report, according to Next Gov, gives Assistant Secretary of Defense for Health Affairs Jonathan Woodson two months from the time the budget is passed to deliver a report on the required steps and potential obstacles toward electronic transmission of prescription drug data.
