DoD’s Wennergren combining skills in new position

Defense Department deputy CIO Dave Wennergren gets set to take on a new role in the department - assistant deputy chief management officer. Wennergren tells hos...

October 21, 2010 — Dave Wennergren jokingly points to the fact he has a statute of limitations on jobs. He only stays in them for about four years. He was the Navy chief information officer for four years. And now he’s moving to a new position as the assistant deputy chief management officer for the Defense Department after four years as the DoD deputy CIO.

The truth, however, is Wennergren’s new position combines the best of both worlds for him — technology and business process improvements.

He will be working for DoD deputy chief management officer Beth McGrath, who used to hold the assistant deputy job before the Senate confirmed her in her new role earlier this year.

Wennergren said he is looking forward to continuing his work with McGrath. He said she was one of the CIO office’s key partners around standards, interoperability and systems modernization.

Wennergren doesn’t yet know what exactly he will be doing as assistant deputy chief management officer beyond working on the CMO’s wide ranging priorities.

He said he will stay around until Teri Takai is named the new DoD CIO and will help with her transition.

Along with leaving as DoD’s deputy CIO, Wennergren no longer will be the vice chairman of the federal CIO Council. He has been vice chairman for five years and worked closely with the council for eight years.
