Furloughs have feds singing the sequestration blues

Furloughs for civilian Defense Department employees officially kicked off this week. That has many employees singing the blues -- literally.

Furloughs for civilian Defense Department employees officially kicked off this week.

That has many employees singing the blues — or in this case singing 1960’s folk pop.

John T. Martin III, a staff member in the Army Chief Information Office/G-6, put together his own special take on furloughs, set to the classic Mamas and the Papas tune, “Monday, Monday.”

The one-day-a-week furloughs — the result of the automatic, across-the-board budget cuts known as sequestration — will affect more than 650,000 DoD employees.

(Army headquarters has opted to furlough employees on Fridays).

One of Martin’s colleagues passed on his ode to the furloughed — with the caveat that he worked on the opus on his own time. Since the furloughs started this week, there’s likely to be a lot more free-time than usual.

“Furlough Fridays”(to the tune of “Monday, Monday” by The Mamas & the Papas)

Furlough Fridays, aren’t cool to me
Furlough Fridays, I will be … losing money
On Furlough Fridays, Furlough Fridays you can guarantee
That Friday mornings I won’t worry bout a VTC
Furlough Fridays, please go away

Friday, Friday, it used to be my favorite day
Oh, Friday mornings, are gonna be boring without any meetings
On Furlough Fridays I’ll stay in bed, and watch Maury

Every other day, every other day

Every other day of the week is fine, yeah
But whenever Friday comes – but whenever Friday comes

You may find me begging for a nickel and dime

Furlough Fridays, aren’t cool to me
Furlough Fridays, I will be … losing money
Oh, Furlough Fridays, Furlough Fridays are a little scary
Cause come October my wife may no longer be with me

Every other day, every other day
Every other day of the week is fine, yeah.
But whenever Friday comes – but whenever Friday comes You may find me begging for a nickel and dime

Furlough Fridays, please go away
Friday, Friday, used to be my favorite day
Woah, Furlough Fridays please go away Furlough Fridays … please go away

Martin’s song is one of several that federal employees have written and recorded about sequestration. Chris Dickson based his “Furlough You” song on CeeLo Green’s hit, “Forget You”.
