Legal Services Corporation

Congress created the LSC in 1974, and operates as a 501(c)3 non profit. It provides funding for 134 independent, nonprofit legal aid programs across the U.S. A bipartisan board of directors with 11 members leads the agency. Those members are appointed by the President and confirmed by the Senate.

**Mission:** To provide financial support for civil legal aid to low-income Americans.

**Budget:** $385 million in appropriations

**FTEs:** about 140
