Congress created the agency through the Denali Commission Act of 1998. It’s an independent federal agency that focuses on developing critical infrastructure and utilities for remote rural communities in Alaska. The commission is located in Anchorage, Alaska — more than 4,200 miles from Washington, D.C. Former President Barack Obama tapped the commission to lead efforts to fight climate change.
Mission: To provide “job training and other economic development services in rural communities,” which include power generation, water and sewer systems and communication networks in rural Alaska
Budget: $19.5 million in appropriations
FTEs: 13 (It also has one part time employee and a handful of “intermittent” employees, who have knowledge of specific project management topics and do not receive benefits)
