Back office, front line: How agents and automation drive warfighting readiness

Agents and automation applied to enterprise workflows are not administrative upgrades. They are readiness multipliers.

The Secretary of Defense’s January Artificial Intelligence Strategy makes one thing clear: The Defense Department must become an “AI-first” warfighting force, from front to back. It calls for speed, measurable outcomes, elimination of bureaucratic blockers, and the rapid deployment of AI across enterprise and mission systems.

The deputy secretary’s memorandum on transforming Advana reinforces that point. By restructuring Advana into a modern War Data Platform (WDP) and elevating financial management and auditability as priorities, leadership is signaling something important: Warfighting advantage depends on enterprise execution.

Too often, we separate “warfighting” from “back office.” In reality, readiness is built in the back office. If pay is wrong, parts are late, contracts stall, or audit trails are unreliable, combat power degrades. Speed on the battlefield requires speed in procurement, logistics, financial management and personnel operations.

Why back-office AI is a readiness imperative

  • Financial management: Agentic systems can continuously reconcile transactions, flag anomalies and generate audit-ready documentation. A clean audit is not just a compliance milestone; it builds trust in resource allocation and frees leadership to move money at operational speed.
  • Acquisition: Intelligent agents can review requirements packages, check compliance, draft documentation and track milestones across systems. This reduces cycle time from requirement to award and accelerates fielding of capability.
  • Logistics and sustainment: Automation can synchronize supply, maintenance and inventory data across systems, giving commanders real-time visibility into readiness drivers. Parts on hand and equipment availability matter more than dashboards.
  • Workforce and human resources: Agents can streamline onboarding, clearances, training tracking and workforce planning. Talent readiness is mission readiness.

The War Data Platform as the foundation

The restructuring of Advana into the War Data Platform is a pivotal move. A standardized data integration layer enables secure, rapid development of agentic AI applications across financial, acquisition, logistics and readiness domains.

But data platforms alone do not create advantage. The opportunity is to pair WDP with enterprise agents and deterministic automation that executes work, not just analyzes it.

That means building workflows where agents interpret policy and context, automations execute repeatable steps across legacy systems, and humans retain decision authority. Every action is logged. Every decision is traceable. Auditability becomes embedded in the process itself.

Five practical steps to operationalize this now

  • Start with high-friction workflows tied directly to readiness: procure-to-pay, travel and pay reconciliation, property accountability, maintenance scheduling and audit remediation.
  • Embed audit trails by design. Every agent recommendation and automated action should be logged, reviewable and attributable. Auditability must be automatic, not manual.
  • Measure cycle time as a readiness metric. Track how long it takes to obligate funds, award contracts, process invoices or clear discrepancies. Speed wins apply to enterprise operations as much as combat systems.
  • Use the WDP to break data silos. Prioritize ingestion and quality of financial, acquisition, logistics, and readiness data so agents operate on trusted information.
  • Establish an orchestration tier above legacy systems and large language models (LLMs). Legacy systems are not going away. The Department runs on decades of enterprise resource planning (ERP), logistics, acquisition and financial platforms. At the same time, multiple LLMs and AI agents will be deployed across classifications and mission areas. Orchestration and governance are paramount.

From enterprise efficiency to combat advantage

The AI Strategy emphasizes that becoming AI-first requires reimagining workflows as if today’s AI existed when they were created. That principle applies just as much to financial close processes and maintenance reporting as it does to battle management systems.

If we redesign enterprise workflows around agents and automation, the results are tangible: faster funding decisions, fewer audit findings, improved equipment availability, reduced administrative burden on operators and clearer visibility into readiness risks.

This is not about replacing people. It is about eliminating friction so leaders and operators can focus on the mission.

In 2026, the fastest path to greater lethality is not only through advanced weapons or AI-enabled battle networks. It is through enterprise systems that move at operational speed, backed by clean data, embedded controls and intelligent automation.

When the back office becomes AI-enabled, auditable and cycle-time focused, it stops being overhead and starts being a strategic asset.

That is how agents and automation translate into warfighting readiness,  from the back office to the front line.
