GOP House takeover to affect cybersecurity

The shifts on Capitol Hill will have ripple effects throughout government - and cybersecurity issues are no exception.

The shifts on Capitol Hill will have ripple effects throughout government, including the cybersecurity sector.

Gov Info Security reports Rep. Mike McCaul (R-TX) has done about as much as any House member can do in getting significant cybersecurity legislation enacted this year. The one thing he couldn’t do was control when a vote might take place.

McCaul is co-chair of the House Cybersecurity Caucus. Starting in January, he and his GOP colleagues will be able to draft the agenda.

Sen. Thomas Carper (D-DE) has served as the chairman of the Senate subcommittee that oversees cybersecurity issues. Carper said a big win for Republicans this year will probably hold up the passage of any cybersecurity legislation until next year.

Some reforms could become law if the Senate adopts the House version of the National Defense Authorization Act that contains a number of key cybersecurity provisions.
