February 6, 2012 — Tony Trenkle is the chief information officer and the director of the Office of Information Services at the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services.
This means he sits on top of a budget that is estimated to be almost one billion dollars.
Trenko joins host John Gilroy to give his perspective on federal IT concerns.
He will discuss siloed business units and vulnerable budgets.
For example, an agency may have a general transformational plan for altering an IT process. The concern is that project managers may have a short term mindset and understand how a project may impact other federal processes.
“Scope” creep is a topic that systems developers talk about.
Trenko mentions this when he talks about the over 175 data centers that are part of his responsibility.
The issue is when new technology or new security requirements put demands on data centers.
Trenko suggests that a good practice may be to review the terms of the agreement to make sure it is as flexible as some of the changing requirements.
