Department of Energy reveals $100 million Smart Grid training program

Cybersecurity Update – Tune in weekdays at 30 minutes past the hour for the latest cybersecurity news on “>The Daily Debrief with Chris Dorobek and Amy Morris (3-7 p.m.). has unveiled a $100 million initiative to train more than 30,000 people to work in the smart grid industry. That covers 54 smart-grid workforce programs for colleges, utilities, and private companies. The focus will be on training electricians, technicians, system operators, power system engineers, cyber security specialists and transmission planners. They want the grid to run smoothly, and be cyber-secure.

  • The director of research for the SANS Institute believes the Navy is ahead of its time when it comes to cybersecurity. NextGov reports that Alan Paller has high praise for the way the Navy has tackled the challenge of cybersecurity — from the top down. Chief of Naval Operations Admiral Gary Roughead launched the U.S. Fleet Cyber Command, which was established to defend IT systems against cyberattacks. It also works with global operations designed to deter and defeat attacks. The Navy has done more in less time than any other military unit, in part by reclassifying its cyber unit as a weapons system.
