New rules might speed adoption of e-health records

Health IT evangelist explains why.

Health care as we know it is changing.

The Department of Health and Human Services recently released guidelines regarding the “meaningful use” of electronic health records (EHR).

You might be asking why this is so important.

For one thing, the new rules let health care providers adopt health IT in more realistic timelines, which is different from what the proposed rule called for. HHS changed the guidelines after getting over 2,000 comments over a period of months.

Brian Ahier is a health IT evangelist at Columbia Medical Center and explains that, for one thing, getting rid of the “all-or-nothing” mentality that previous existed means EHR might be easier to achieve.
