Twitter and Facebook users beware: Spam is on the rise.

Hackers and spammers are looking for security holes in the social networking sites, USA Today reports.

After locating the security holes, hackers are alerting spamming gangs who stand ready to blast high volumes of spam through the new holes for as long as it stays unpatched.

Such spam comes from “clickjackers” who make money by getting users to click to a webpage full of ads or to an advertising-related survey. They get paid up to $1 a click from advertisers and can make hundreds of thousands of dollars a day.

So far both Twitter and Facebook have been able to contain the impact of spam surges due to built in early warning systems.
