With the explosion of texting, the fact that mobile devices are phones as well is becoming increasingly besides the point, The Wall Street Journal reports.

According to the article, a recent survey found that college students’ predominant goal when using a cell phone was to pass along information in as little time, with as little small talk, as possible.

Social media sites like Twitter are driving the surge in texting, as well as economics — sending a text is cheaper than making a call.
