The federal cyber workforce is not facing an immediate retirement wave, but it will if agencies don’t increase the number of younger workers.

A new report by the CIO Council finds the average age of the federal cyber worker is 51 to 55. Most have at least 10 years until they are eligible to retire.

The 131-page report also shows there is a deficiency in cyber workers under 30. This group accounts for only 5.1 percent of the entire 22,000-person workforce.

The study also finds there is a wide assortment of job classifications under the 2210 series, ranging from security to customer support to systems analysis to Internet.
