Segment 3

The Data center has become the focal point for several IT initiatives and trends. The consolidation initiative may be reducing the number of data centers, but that’s only the beginning of the story. Agencies find they also need to update and optimize the data centers they do keep. They are also re- evaluating how users and applications interact with data centers. This is driven by the need to balance dedicated use in the client-server or web application model, shared services in the software- or infrastructure-as-a- service model, and the emergence of the cloud as part of the extended infrastructure. Plus, new technologies such as solid-state mass storage and software-defined storage change the performance and management characteristics of infrastructure. Federal News Radio’s expert federal panel discussed these topics. In Part One, panelists discuss what happens data center consolidation as agencies try to optimize the resulting infrastructure. Plus strategies for using shared services where appropriate. Part Two covers metrics for success in reducing costs and infrastructure redundancy. In Part Three, panelists cover cloud adoption, strategies for maintaining hybrid environments and best practices when using multi-tenant environments for critical agency applications and data.
