The chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff said now is the time to step back, assess the impact of 10 years of war and ensure the institution remains on course.
The Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff is urging the military to closely examine its relationship with the American people. Navy Admiral Mike Mullen says the high level of support the military enjoys could be undermined by how few people actually serve. He added, a disconnect between the military and the population at large could be harmful to the military. Citing 10 years of war, Mullen called for a military self evaluation to ensure the institution remains on the right track. Mullen spoke at the opening of a leadership conference at the National Defense University at Fort McNair. The conference focuses on military professionalism.
