Rand Paul: Put Coast Guard in Defense

Newly elected Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., thinks the U.S. Coast Guard should be part of the Defense Department, not the Department of Homeland Security.

It’s 2011. Do you know where your Coast Guard is? Senator Rand Paul (R-Ky.) is floating a plan that would give the Pentagon permanent control of the Coast Guard. Right now, the Coast Guard is part of Homeland Security. Paul says moving it to DOD would save money and makes sense, because the Coast Guard has been working with the Navy on Operation Iraqi Freedom and other defense activities. Defense News reports the idea is part of a bigger plan that Paul says would save $500 billion.
