DISA has plans to manage and monitor a million cellphones and other mobile gadgets.
The Defense Information Systems Agency wants to change the way DOD manages cell phones and wireless accounts. NextGov reports DISA has proffered a plan to centrally control one million devices as a mobile virtual network operator, or MVNO. It has asked industry to provide suggestions by June 20. Under the new model, DISA would lease large amounts of bandwidth from mobile carriers, then resell it to DOD components. DISA expects improvements in cost and security. The plan would cover not only cell phones, but smart phones, tablets and wi-fi access as well. It would also let DISA deploy low-power transmitters to fill gaps in commercial cell service.
