The Pentagon has cut the cord on a $16 million dollar battlefield radio program, after it says costs spiraled out of control, Nextgov reports.
DoD officially canceled its efforts to develop a radio that could transmit broadband data on the battlefield. Rep. Buck McKeon (R-Calif.), the chairman of the House Armed Services Committee, said in a letter the per unit cost for the radios skyrocketed after the Pentagon slashed the number of radios it planned to buy from 82,000 to just 10,000.
The Pentagon now plans to buy radios from industry that can use software developed and owned by the government.
