NIST releases second draft of Smart Grid cyber framework

Work on the Smart Grid continues and so does work on its cybersecurity framework.

The National Institute of Standards and Technology has expanded its list of standards, guidance, and proposals for Smart Grid Interoperability.

The NIST Framework and Roadmap for Smart Grid Interoperability Standards 2.0 builds upon the first cyber outline the agency released.

The previous version laid out the initial plan for transforming the nation’s aging electric power system into a network integrating information and communication technologies with a power-delivery infrastructure.

This latest version includes:

• An expanded view of the architecture of the Smart Grid;
• Ways to ensure cybersecurity for the Smart Grid and guidance on cybersecurity practices;
• A new framework for testing systems that connect to the Smart Grid; and
• A “to do” list, including how to handle electromagnetic disturbance and interference.
