The Thrift Savings Plan (TSP) continued its positive streak in May, after rebounding in April from a slight March downturn. While one fund took an unexpected downturn into the red, the rest of the federal retirement funds generally posted higher returns last month or remained relatively unchanged.

The international stocks I fund posted the highest monthly return in May at 3.76 percent, and remains the strongest performer of 2017 to-date. Over the past 12 months, however, it only ranks as the third-highest.

The small-cap stocks S fund posted the only negative return of May at -0.77 percent. That hiccup, however, has done little to diminish the overall state of the fund, which remains the highest 12-month return at 18.74 percent.

The F fund, a fixed-income index investment fund, remains unchanged at 0.81 percent in May, and has shown modest long-term growth at 2.57 percent for 2017, and 1.86 percent for the past 12 months.

The  C fund, which invests in the S&P 500 Index, posted a slightly higher return at 1.41 percent this month, and remains the second-highest fund over the past 12 months at 17.49 percent.

The super-safe, low-risk G fund posted a 0.19 percent return in May, a slight decrease from April, but has shown slight growth over 2017 and the past 12 months.

The TSP’s lifecycle funds saw across-the-board improvements in their returns in May. The L 2050 fund posted the best return of the bunch, at 1.51 percent, and remains the strongest 12-month lifecycle performer at 15.05 percent.
