As January’s huge snowstorm bore down on Washington, D.C., everyone wanted to know whether or not the government was going to remain open. At 10 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 21, the Office of Personnel Management decided that the government would close at noon the next day to allow feds to get home before the storm hit. OPM subsequently announced closings for Monday and Tuesday as well, as the Washington metro region received anywhere from 17 to 30 inches of snow. Feds and other residents of the area took advantage of the days off to go sledding on the National Mall.
