Social media changes government in more ways than one

Some agencies are taking social media to the next level.

While many government agencies still tend to employ the “broadcast” model when using social media, some are engaging through hashtags, community building initiatives, and geo-location analysis. Mashable.com reports that these efforts are helping to better inform the public and alert them to public safety emergencies in real-time. A good recent example of this is how the team of energy companies and government agencies responding to the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico are putting these strategies to use.
