NASA is adopting open source software in a big way. Open source software is software in the public domain, often without licensing charges. It’s also a development philosophy that can be more collaborative, less restrictive and less expensive than proprietary developments. NASA Ames Research Center in Santa Clara, California is hosting an Open Source Summit. We spoke with Nicholas Skytland, director of NASA’s Open Government Initiative. He told us what he sees as chief benefits of open source software.
