October 21, 2014 — Today’s interview is with Jason Kimrey, the area director, US Federal, Intel Corporation.
What precipitated the interview was the presence of an Intel booth at a local trade show that was talking about cloud applications. It may be a surprise to some readers, but Intel has altered its manufacturing of chips to make the hardware more adaptable to the cloud.
After seven years, virtualization has matured and can now squeeze as much storage out of a system. We are at the point in maturity of technology where Intel can design chips that can be optimized for specific cloud functions.
During the interview, Kimrey details how the dynamic scaling that virtualization provides can alter the manufacturing process of CPUs. Run time characteristics can be measured and CPU speed and ability to handled data can be designed to optimize for the cloud.
Additionally, hardware design can allow for easier cooling in data centers as well as hardware for mobile devices.
Intel is in the discussion at NIST for replacing the CAC cards for federal employees. Kimrey talks about derived credentials and what Intel plays in this discussion
