#3 Government closing data centers as part of federal IT overhaul

The government is closing 137 of about 2,100 data centers this year as part of an effort to close 800 of the facilities by 2015.

Chief Information Officer Vivek Kundra said Wednesday that the government has already closed 39 data centers. Fifteen of the shuttered centers are based in the Washington area. One-third of the closed facilities belonged to NASA.

#2 House Republicans mull plan to hike debt ceiling every two months

House Republicans are considering a plan to grant only incremental increases to the federal debt limit in a bid to extract more concessions on spending cuts and budgetary reform from the Obama administration.

The idea has a champion in Grover Norquist, the conservative activist and president of Americans for Tax Reform, who says he is “building allies” in the House Republican Conference to push for extending the debt limit every two months.

President Barack Obama issued an Executive Order Wednesday requiring agencies to streamline and make services to citizens more efficient.

#2 Twister death toll 318; most since 1932 outbreak

Authorities say the death toll from the devastating tornado outbreak across the South has climbed to 318, making it the deadliest day for twisters since the Great Depression.

Alabama was in the path of the most destruction from Wednesday’s storms. Authorities on Friday raised the number of confirmed dead to 228. More than 30 lost their lives in Tuscaloosa, which is home to the University of Alabama. Two students are among the dead.
