The International Monetary Fund has been hit by a large and sophisticated cyber attack. The fund manages financial crises around the world. It houses confidential information about the fiscal condition of many nations. The attack was first reported by the New York Times. The World Bank was so concerned about the attack, it cut off cyber links with the IMF. The two institutions have headquarters across the street from one another in downtown D.C. Senior officials called the attack sophisticated and serious. But they provided few details. Sources tell the Times that spear phishing, or socially engineered attacks, might have been involved.
