The House Homeland Security Committee passes the Countering Violent Extremism Act. The bill creates a CVE office within the Homeland Security Department to focus its international and domestic terrorism programs. Erroll Southers is the director of the Homegrown Violent Extremism Studies at the University of Southern California and a former assistant secretary of the Transportation Security Administration. He tells In Depth with Francis Rose that countering violent extremism is important — but the committee should think about the impacts of homegrown violence too.
