House turns up heat on agency programs

Agencies should prepare for a new level of scrutiny from Congress.

The House passed a resolution Wednesday, 423-0, requiring every committee and subcommittee to hold periodic oversight hearings looking at waste, fraud, abuse or mismanagement of federal programs.

In the resolution, lawmakers say at least one hearing should include agency officials testifying on auditor’s findings, and at least one hearing should be based on programs on the Government Accountability Office’s high-risk list. GAO issued its bi-annual list Jan. 22 where it listed 30 programs that need to be watched closely.

The Defense Department has eight programs on the high-risk list, as well as the 2010 Census, interagency contracting, Medicaid and Medicare and cybersecurity also are on the list.
