One Marine company is going 100 percent solar.
Over the summer, a company of Marines at Camp Pendleton, California, used only solar energy to power its Command Center, National Defense Magazine reports.
Solar panels, solar-powered generators, and solar-fueled heating and cooling systems power the center’s equipment.
Officials say, if all goes well, green technology could soon proliferate throughout the Marine Corps.
The 150 marines in the company will continue using green technology when they leave soon for Afghanistan. Commanders say troops will leave behind most of their bulky gas generators and A/C powered batteries, relying instead on renewable energy technology.
