The rapid convergence of security technologies combined with growing concerns about individual privacy are creating a need to understand the purpose of identification and credentialing in your environment and the impact on the public. Financial institutions and commercial services are adopting high tech methods to protect consumer access to convenient online transaction systems. Governments have adopted electronic identity documents to facilitate fast and convenient border crossing including ePassports, enhanced driver’s licenses, and RFID Passport cards. We are all aware of public space surveillance systems to reduce street crime in urban centers. Proposed identity credentials are to provide a trusted citizen identification solution for employment authorization including biometric verification. How will these identification systems foster trust and confidence by consumers that their personal information is secure and protected? About the Panelists:

Mark Cohn
Vice President of Enterprise Security
Unisys Corporation

He has responsibility for cross-enterprise security initiatives and solution engineering. He directs the Enterprise Security practice with responsibility for all security solutions and services inside Unisys Federal Systems including IT cyber security, credentialing and access management, physical security, and secure commerce and in-transit visibility. He acted as technical services director for border security and critical infrastructure where he managed SBInet mission system engineering and product development for the first phase Common Operational Picture system. He leads the Unisys global team of experts in the application of information technology to physical security and surveillance systems, transportation, and international border security and is the Unisys representative for industry/government liaison on cybersecurity and critical infrastructure protection.

Mark is a frequent speaker on security and information technology convergence including electronic surveillance and physical security, identity management for transportation security and access control, civil use of biometrics and multipurpose credentials. He is an expert on design and implementation of trustworthy, highly available distributed systems. He began his career at Unisys as a senior systems programmer on fault-tolerant systems used for aviation infrastructure management and was the principal designer and chief engineer for nationwide critical command and control capabilities essential to air traffic control that have proven to be among the most reliable systems ever put into operation.

Prior to his current assignment, Mark served as vice president and chief architect for Unisys Global Public Sector, where he provided technical leadership for major public sector engagements in defense and domestic security.

Mark holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in behavioral and social sciences from the University of Maryland. He also holds an M.S.T.M. degree in management information systems from American University.


Bryan Ichikawa
Vice President of the Identity Solutions Practice
Unisys Federal Systems

He provides tactical assistance to qualify, win, and deliver new business opportunities that utilize smart card, PKI, biometrics, and security technologies. Bryan is also responsible for representing Unisys in global industry and standards organizations for smart cards.

Bryan is a globally recognized expert in smart card and security technologies and solutions. He is a contributing author for “Smart Cards – Seizing Strategic Business Opportunities” and holds two patents for data security and user privacy in communications systems.

Bryan has previously held positions at Thomson Media, including management responsibilities for the CTST family of Conferences and Exhibitions, Executive Director of the Business Solutions Group for SPYRUS, and Director of Marketing for Smart Cards at Certicom Corp.

He has worked extensively with the Smart Card Alliance over the past decade. He has held many active roles within the Alliance, and currently serves on their Board of Directors, is a member of the Steering Committee for the SCA Identity Council, and is an instructor for the SCA Educational Institute.

Bryan holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Lynchburg College, Virginia.


Dr. Larry Ponemon

Ponemon Institute

Dr. Larry Ponemon is the Chairman and Founder of the Ponemon Institute, a research “think tank” dedicated to advancing privacy and data protection practices. Dr. Ponemon is considered a pioneer in privacy auditing and the Responsible Information Management or RIM framework.

Ponemon Institute conducts independent research, educates leaders from the private and public sectors and verifies the privacy and data protection practices of organizations in a various industries. In addition to Institute activities, Dr. Ponemon is an adjunct professor for ethics and privacy at Carnegie Mellon University’s CIO Institute. He is a Fellow of the Center for Government Innovation of the Unisys Corporation.

Dr. Ponemon consults with leading multinational organizations on global privacy management programs. He has extensive knowledge of regulatory frameworks for managing privacy and data security including financial services, health care, pharmaceutical, telecom and Internet. Dr. Ponemon was appointed to the Advisory Committee for Online Access & Security for the United States Federal Trade Commission. He was appointed by the White House to the Data Privacy and Integrity Advisory Committee for the Department of Homeland Security. Dr. Ponemon was also an appointed to two California State task forces on privacy and data security laws.

Dr. Ponemon is a member of the National Board of Advisors of the Eller College of Business and Public Administration, University of Arizona. He serves as Chairman of the Government Policy Advisory Committee and Co-Chair of the Internet Task Force for the Council of American Survey and Research Organizations (CASRO).

Dr. Ponemon was a senior partner of PricewaterhouseCoopers, where he founded the firm’s global compliance risk management group. Prior to joining Price Waterhouse as a partner, Dr. Ponemon served as the National Director of Business Ethics Services for KPMG Peat Marwick, and was appointed Executive Director of the KPMG Business Ethics Institute.

Dr. Ponemon has held chaired (tenured) faculty positions and published numerous articles and learned books. He has presented hundreds of keynote speeches or learned presentations at national or international conferences on privacy, data protection, information security, corporate governance, and responsible information management.

Dr. Ponemon is an active member of the International Association of Privacy Professionals, serving as founding member of the Certified Information Privacy Professional (CIPP) Advisory Board.

Dr. Ponemon is column editor for Computerworld, CSO Magazine, BNA, Dark Reading and other leading publications. He is a frequent commentator on privacy and business ethics for CNN, Fox News, MSNBC, The Wall Street Journal, New York Times, Washington Post, USA Today, Financial Times, Business 2.0, Newsweek, Business Week, U.S. News & World Report, CIO Magazine, Industry Standard, Boston Globe, InfoWorld, InformationWeek, Forbes, Fortune, CFO Magazine, Red Herring, Dow Jones News and others.

Dr. Ponemon earned his Ph.D. at Union College in Schenectady, New York. He has a Master’s degree from Harvard University, Cambridge, Massachusetts, and attended the doctoral program in system sciences at Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Dr. Ponemon earned his Bachelors with Highest Distinction from the University of Arizona, Tucson, Arizona. He is a Certified Public Accountant and a Certified Information Privacy Professional.

Dr. Ponemon is a veteran (Vietnam War era) of the United States Navy. He is married and has two sons. Dr. Ponemon is an instrument rated private pilot.
