DoD balances need to know with need to share

American Forces Press Service reports that DoD is facing the challenge to share information while keeping some information protected in the wake of WikiLeaks.

How do you balance the need to know vs. the need to share? That’s the battle going on right now at the Defense Department, especially in the wake of WikiLeaks.

Robert Butler, the deputy assistant secretary of defense for cyber and space policy says WikiLeaks has highlighted the tension between the strategy of “share to win” and the necessity to enforce “need to know,” the American Forces Press Service reports.

But Butler says the idea of “share to win” and “need to know” are not mutually exclusive. DoD needs to share information to win, as well as be conscious of the need to know.
