An online privacy bill of rights might soon be a reality.

A new bill would require that companies tracking consumer data seek permission before sharing information about a person with other companies.

Consumers would also be allowed to see the data collected about them.

The Wall Street Journal reports the bill will be co-sponsored by Senators John McCain and John Kerry.

The bill would cover data including contact information, fingerprints, and cellphone and computer ID information, and be applied to all industries.
