A new blog allows the public to comment on draft proposals about changing the classification and declassification system.
The Public Interest Declassification Board is an advisory committee established by Congress to promote public access to documents “of significant U.S. national security decisions and activities,” according to the board’s website.
Every other Wednesday for the next eight weeks, the PID Board will publish two to three white paper synopses to the blog, which is hosted by the National Archives. The blog is open for public comment through May 4.
In December 2009, President Obama had tasked the PID Board with overhauling the security classification system.
Some of the proposals will address streamlining the classification system, establishing standard metadata for archiving and encouragig policymakers to consider not classifying certain categories of information.
