Corruption investigations in Iraq, Afghanistan on the rise

U.S. troops in Iraq are gearing up for a new mission: Packing their bags, boarding planes and leaving the country by December 31 of next year. That’s when an agreement with the Iraqi government expires.

Troops prepare to leave at a time when the military and contractors are facing more investigations of alleged reconstruction fraud and corruption in both Iraq and Afghanistan.

Earlier this year, the Defense Department’s Inspector General said he was investigating 223 cases, an 18 percent increase from the previous year.

Stuart Bowen, Special Inspector General for Iraq Reconstruction, said the uptick in cases isn’t a surprise.
