Trusted ID strategy distrusted by some
An internet ID for Americans would be different from a national ID card... or would it?
“A national strategy to keep you safe in cyber space”, or, “An Internet ID for every American”.
Depending on how you look at it, the formation of the National Program Office to oversee the administration’s national strategy for trusted identities in cyberspace is either a great idea to ensure a secure and privacy-enhancing ecosystem for the Internet, or Big Brother inserting himself into your cyber-life.
Commerce Secretary Gary Locke says this is not designed to be a national ID card, nor is it supposed to be a government controlled system. The administration estimates that e-commerce worldwide is worth $10 trillion of business online annually.
Commerce is setting up the National Program Office; details about the project are scarce.
