Back at the height of the housing crisis in 2009, the federal government made good on what had been an implied promise. It took over financial responsibility for the mortgage giants Fannie May and Freddie Mac. Since then, they’ve cost the taxpayers tens of billions of dollars. The housing market has improved a little, but Fannie and Freddie are still under conservatorship. Bloomberg Government senior economic analyst Nela Richardson says that’s not likely to change.
