The U.S. Postal Service faces a dire financial situation. Postmaster General Patrick Donahoe has been asking Congress to step in for the past year. But, so far, Congress has not passed comprehensive postal reform. Donahoe now says Congress has two choices — pass a bill or give the agency money to bail it out. Donahoe spoke Friday about the Postal Service’s troubles at the National Press Club. Emily and Tom played clips from the luncheon on today’s show.

Leaders in the Obama Administration are working Capitol Hill in public and behind the scenes to argue for their piece of the fiscal 2014 budget. Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius testified before the House Energy and Commerce Subcommittee on Health last week. Emily and Tom played parts of the hearing on the show.
Poorly trained federal acquisition staff are putting agencies at risk of overspending, according to Republican and Democratic leaders of the congressional committees that oversee general government operations. They released a joint statement after receiving a report from the Government Accountability Office, which recommended the Office of Federal Procurement Policy ensure agencies collect and report costs associated with training. Belva Martin, GAO’s director of Acquisition and Sourcing Management Issues, spoke with Tom and Emily about the details of the report.
When all is said and done, the 2014 budget for federal agencies will likely look a lot different than the Obama administration’s initial request. Cameron Leuthy, a senior budget analyst with Bloomberg Government, spoke with Tom and Emily about the President’s proposal. He spent 20 years at the Office of Management and Budget and the Defense Department.
NASA Administrator Charles Bolden heads to Capitol Hill this week to discuss his and lawmakers’ budget priorities for the agency. Some in Congress want NASA to send people back to the moon while NASA is focused on Mars. Marcia Smith, editor of Space Policy Online and a member of a committee that recently looked at NASA’s space strategy, spoke with Tom and Emily about NASA’s budget request.
