In Depth Newscast – June 20

  • Kenneth Melson is expected to resign as acting director of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. Melson has recently come under fire because of a mishandled weapons operation. CNN reports he may resign in the next day or two.
  • The Defense Department (DoD) wants to cut back service contracting. The latest version of the defense authorization bill includes more than a billion dollars in cuts. The move is designed to mirror the hiring freeze that is now in place for most of DoD’s civilian workforce.
  • OMB is putting together a new program to field customer service information. Called “Fast Track”, the program will require federal agencies to get more useful customer service details about the services they provide. Fast Track will also take steps to make surveys and questions as easy as possible for the public.
  • The General Services Administration (GSA) is creating a new committee for green office solutions. The new Green Building Advisory Committee will report to GSA about ways of getting sustainable technology into federal buildings. The committee is GSA’s latest action under the Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007.
