Deep cuts to federal employee salaries and benefits were among the recommendations that the National Commission on Fiscal Responsibility and Reform did not approve today.
The commission needed 14 votes to pass the strategy aimed at reducing the federal deficit, but received only 11.
Jason Fichtner is a senior research fellow with the Mercatus Center at George Mason University. He previously served as Acting Deputy Commissioner of Social Security.
While the plan didn’t pass, Fichtner says we have not seen the last of these recommendations. He says the 112th Congress is almost sure to bring them up next year as it works to reduce the federal deficit.
