US companies eye trade threats

On this week’s edition of Bloomberg Government’s Capital Impact show with host Allen Scott:

  • With President Barack Obama declaring this week “World Trade Week,” BGOV Trade Analysts Caitlin Webber and Ken Monahan evaluate trade tensions facing U.S. companies, including the fight over solar panel imports from China and the unintended side effects of U.S. duties.
  • As lawmakers craft legislation to reduce or eliminate duties on imported goods, questions over whether the provisions are considered “earmarks” put their passage in jeopardy. Congressional Analysts Melissa Avstreih and Loren Duggan weigh in on the potential effects of the legislation and other key items to watch for in Congress this summer.

Melissa Avstreih is a transportation analyst at Bloomberg Government. She had been a partner at the Ferguson Group, a consulting firm where she chaired the Transportation Practice Group. Avstreih worked as a staffer for a member of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee. She holds a political science degree from West Chester University and a master’s of international commerce and policy from George Mason University.
Loren Duggan is Bloomberg Government’s chief legislative analyst. Before joining Bloomberg, he was editor of Congressional Quarterly’s House Action Reports, providing summaries and analysis of legislation. He also contributed to CQ’s legislative tracking services during his decade with the company. Loren holds a bachelor’s degree in political science and psychology from American University.
Ken Monahan is an economic analyst. Before joining Bloomberg, he was an international economist and acting team lead in the Office of Trade Policy Analysis at the Commerce Department’s International Trade Administration. He holds a B.A. in economics from the University of New Hampshire, a masters in central and eastern European studies from Jagiellonian University in Krakow, Poland, and a masters in international relations from the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies.
Allen Scott (moderator) specializes in customer on boarding and training at Bloomberg Government. Allen previously worked at Arbitron, Inc. where he served in a variety of roles from customer service to sales operations manager. Prior to Arbitron, Allen worked in radio for several years in the Washington and Baltimore areas. Most recently he spent six years at 99.1 HFS as co-host and news director.
Caitlin Webber is a trade policy analyst at Bloomberg Government. She had worked in congressional affairs and she covered foreign policy as a reporter for Congressional Quarterly. Webber holds a B.A. in government and Spanish from Sweet Briar College and an M.S. in comparative politics from the London School of Economics.
