Navy releases social media handbook

The Navy released a handbook on the safe and effective use of social media, GovFresh reports.

The Navy released a handbook on the safe and effective use of social media, according to GovFresh.

“The rapid growth of social media platforms and technologies have flattened and democratized the communications environment in ways we are just beginning to comprehend,” said Navy CIO D. J Moynihan in the introduction of the handbook (see below.)

The Navy wants to educate sailors and their families on how to safely use the internet – just like it did in the past with the telephone and faxes.

Sailors are asked to follow some basic rules, such as admitting to any mistakes included in a post, avoiding any copyright infringements, and replacing any errors you might see posted by others with facts, not argument.

According to the handbook, the Navy encourages sailors to tell their stories. Through blogging, Facebook posts and Tweets, a sailor becomes an “ambassador” for the Navy.
