July 12, 2011 — Host John Gilroy is joined by Dr. Seth Foldy, Director of the Public Health Informatics and Technology Program Office for the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) in Atlanta.
On today’s show, Dr. Foldy will talk about the way the CDC is responding to the challenge of providing appropriate warnings in a secure environment.
One of the jobs at the CDC is to collect, analyze, and report on wide range of medical information.
Rather than smashing silos, Dr. Foldy thinks that silos of information were created for a good reason and one should respect the nature of that information.
When attempting to interoperate systems, one should give consideration to the reasons for the isolation of some of the technologies.
One issue that has to be addressed is how information is conveyed in a timely manner to many facilities.
For example, the state of Massachusetts has over 700 public health offices.
Multiply that by fifty states and you get a small idea of the challenge that the Centers for Disease Control has in giving out information on communicable diseases.
