Danny Werfel has resigned from his position of controller of the Office of Management Budget and left the federal government, an OMB spokesperson confirmed Monday.
Federal Times first reported Werfel’s resignation.
Werfel had served as controller since October 2009. He was on detail as the acting IRS commissioner since May 2013, until the Senate confirmed John Koskinen as commissioner in December. As controller, he coordinated OMB’s efforts to improve areas of financial management, including real property management, improper payments and grant management.
Werfel took on an expanded role within the agency on an interim basis, overseeing OMB’s efforts in federal procurement, IT and performance management. He helped create the Treasury Department’s Office of Financial Innovation and Transformation.
Previously, Werfel served as chief of OMB’s Financial Integrity and Analysis Branch, an OMB budget examiner and a policy analyst in OMB’s Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs.
In May 2013, President Barack Obama appointed Werfel to serve as acting commissioner of the IRS.
Werfel took over for Steven Miller, who resigned from the agency after a report by the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration found the IRS improperly singled out conservative groups for special scrutiny.
Werfel received the Presidential Rank Award for Meritorious Service in 2008.
Attempts to reach Werfel about his future plans were unsuccessful.
